In Ocarina of Time you get three spells, Which spell is your favorite?

1) Dins fire:
After Link casts the spell fire surrounds him creating a temporary shield, damages enemies and lights all torches in the area.

2) Farores wind:
Creates a return warp point in the dungeon your in.

3) Nayrus love:
Creates a shield and prevents you from taking any damage for a time.

The Hawk Tribe

I promised a Fire Emblem article, so here it is. Before that though I though I would say I am still looking for an agent to represent my book. It will be a bit longer before I have tons of free time . The Hawk tribe is a race of Laguz found in Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn. They come from the mountain islands of Phoenicis, and as their name suggests they are able to transform into large, powerful hawks. Through the two games it is found that the Hawks of Phoenicis and Ravens of Kilvas are bitter enemies, with Phoenicis looking down on Kilvas for their history of thievery. After the Serenes Massacre, the Hawk tribe took the Heron noble Reyson and his father to live as they did.

There are only three real Hawk characters in both games. Cheap, yes. The first and most important is the Hawk King, Tibarn. Having great strength, hearing, and sight, Tibarn was chosen to lead based on his abilities. He enjoys fighting, and views chaos as a necessary part of life. In addition to this, he is known to eat a lot, which is a common Laguz trait. He has a rough attitude, and will usually go to drastic measures to accomplish a goal. Jannaf is the oldest of the three Hawks. Known as the King’s eyes, he is able to see to great lengths. He has a sarcastic personality, but does as the King says. Ulki, on the other hand, is able to hear “grass growing on the other side of the country” . He enjoys listening to birds, and has a tendency to speak very little. Jannaf an Ulki commonly bicker, but for odd reasons.

As mentioned, Hawks live in the mountains of Phoenicis, and have their homes carved into the very walls of the cliffs. Their diet consists of fish and berries said to be found only in Phoenicis. Tibarn is known to eat fish raw, but if all Hawks eat this way is not said. The Hawks dress in very unusual clothing, most of which appears ripped or torn. They often wear sandals and headbands, and Tibarn is seen to own a knife (Though this is likely used for his food, not his fighting).

After the Serenes Massacre, Tibarn took Reyson and his father to live in Phoenicis. After that day, Tibarn swore revenge against the Begnion Empire, and attacked Begnion ships that crossed his land. In Path of Radiance, Tibarn has a chance to attack the Apostle Sanaki, but says he will do it one day with honor. Eventually, Tibarn forgives the Apostle after she swears to restore Serenes Forest. At the end of Radiant Dawn, it is shown that the bird tribes would all live together in Serenes Forest, but food issues remained a problem.

Unlike all the other Laguz races, save Wolves, the Hawk tribe doesn’t try too hard to say “Hey, look at me, I’m an animal race.” . They are a simple race, but an interesting one all the same. In future games I would like to see them utilized a bit more, but who can say.

Plans for the Future

Well the book process I mentioned several posts ago is going alright. I am currently writing the manuscript and looking for an agent to represent it. Kind of like looking for a house and buying furniture for it at the same time, no? Anyway, it’s a busy process, but I feel it will even itself out eventually. For that reason I will keep Zelda Kingdom open, despite my not being able to get on very often . Now, this is not an actual article, but refers to the future of Zelda Kingdom. We have been open for roughly four months now, which by most standards isn’t much. Regardless, we have a lot of articles up already, plus two galleries. Because of this, I have decided I will be contacting a few sites and looking for affiliation. This will help our name spread and maybe even get us some more views! And most importantly, I plan on expanding the content Zelda Kingdom will be offering. Despite the name, we will now be writing articles for various series, such as Mario, Fire Emblem, and perhaps even Final Fantasy. If you have any suggestions on what to do with the site (besides the often stupid “get a proper layout” post and run trick), please let me know either via e-mail or in the topic.

My next article will be about Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. See you then!

Poll: What Makes a Sword?

Alright, welcome to another article here on Zelda Kingdom. If you’ve noticed a lack of activity here lately, that’s likely because it has been inactive. Anyway, I decided to write a poll today, which will allow readers more of a chance to share their opinion than usually.

The poll is this, what makes a sword in the Zelda series? What makes a sword THE best sword you’ve ever swung?

A.) Size
B.) Looks
C.) Story
D.) Whatever they put in it
E.) Power
F.) Other

Size could play a very important role in picking your favorite sword. After all, people generally flock to the largest sword available, just because long, thick swords are cool! Of coarse, we’ll just ignore the weight factor and how much gravity would pull on such weapons .

Looks are another big factor. If a sword is just a sword, it would be pretty dull, right? That’s where style comes in. A good sword is one that has it’s own hilt, a detailed blade, and an interesting color set-up. Now, again we’ll ignore the unrealisticness of it, remember we are talking about video games here.

A game’s story can really influence your opinion of anything in said game. If Zelda where to give you a sword, an average one, then disappear for most of the game, only to be announced dead half way through, what would happen you think? Well of coarse she would pop up somehwere later on, but you would really respect and cherish that sword she gave you. You can look at it a number of ways, but in the end, the story can really play a large part.

Nowadays, swords are like cereal. You look at them and ask “What are they putting in this?” . A holy essence, a spirit, some ancient material that YOU just happen to get, the list goes on. But sometimes the thing inside the blade just makes it seem cooler.

What did they make the sword for anyway? Was it to…look cool as you wave it above your head? Cut ropes and other frail things? To hold in the air just because it’s fun? Or was it to kill and destroy? Based on almost every game I’ve played, every book I’ve read, and every sword I’ve seen, I would guess that last one. So on that note, the power of the sword must play some role in picking a favorite. After all, hacking soemthing away with a blunt sword can only be fun in Fire Emblem.

And last is whatever else you think makes a sword important! Let’s hear what you think now.

The Life of a Zora

Here’s a theory I’ve been developing for years. Almost years anyway. This article will look at the Zora’s from Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, and The Wind Waker, and see how they have evolved and adapted to the ever changing world of Hyrule.

Ocarina of Time:

The first time you meet a Zora in Ocarina of Time, according to the immediate plot anyway, is during your third mission as a child to gain the spiritual stone of water. The Zora’s are protected by a mighty waterfall, which can only be parted by one who plays the melody of the royal family; Zelda’s Lullaby. This is because the Zora’s are the guardian’s of the royal family, and a long time ally. The Zoras’ home is Zora’s Domain, a very aptly named kingdom partially in water and partially above. The Zoras worship their guardian spirit, Jabu-Jabu, a large whale. His stomach serves as Link’s third dungeon as a child. Inside, Link must save Princess Ruto, a spunky and arrogant young Zora girl who has become lost in her guardian’s stomach. In the end Link saves the day as always, but when he accepts the Zora’s Sapphire, the spiritual stone of water, he gets more than he bargains for. Ruto’s mother told her to give the stone to the man she would marry one day. For this reason, the Zora’s sapphire is often called the Zoras engagement ring.

In Ocarina of Time, Zora’s are very arrogant in general, though some are nice enough to play games with Link.

Twilight Princess:

Presumably hundreds of years later, the Zora’s have moved slightly, though they kept the name “Zora’s Domain” for their residence. If one were to compare a map of Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess, they would see that Zora’s Domain has moved North somewhat. In addition, Old Zora’s Domain can be found upon entering Zora’s Domain from Hyrule Field. This is seen in the steps that lead down to a shop in Ocarina of Time being present. Princess Ruto is not present in this game, but she is replaced by the sickly Prince Ralis (Why do all princes have to start with an R and an A?) . After his mother was killed by Zant’s messengers, Ralis fled but got sick from lack of water and was later found by Ilia. He is later saved by Link, and after spending some time near his father’s(and presumably mother’s) grave, he returns to Zora’s Domain as the rightful heir to the throne.
Zoras are much more friendly in Twilight Princess, and seem to enjoy mingling with other races. In particular, they like the Goron’s hot springs. Kakariko village is said to be a special place for the Zoras, and is where the grave of the royal Zoras is found. In Zora’s Domain, some Zoras will tell you about a special rock formation called mother and child rock.

The Wind Waker:

By the time of Wind Waker, there is not one Zora to be seen, except for by Medli, a young girl of the Rito tribe. This Zora comes to Medli in a dream-like vision that teaches her a song needed to enter a temple with Link and power the Master Sword. By this, it is thought that the Rito, the bird-like race introduced in Wind Waker, are the descendants of the Zoras. If you consider the facts, Rito only gain wings when Valoo, their guardian spirit, grants them a scale. This would explain how they came to be a bird-like race. My theory is that the Zoras and Sheikah merged into the Rito to avoid death by the Great Flood, and with the powers of the Sheikah they were able to transform (read my Sheikah article for more info on this ) .
Since there are no Zoras in this game besides Medli’s silent descendant, it’s hard to say what became of the Zoras as a race and how they changed. One interesting fact is that mother and child island can be found in this game, which is likely mother and child rock from Twilight Princess.

You may have noticed I added a Twilight Princess section to the Zelda art. It isn’t a gallery yet but I’ll be turning it into one soon. I also plan on getting Wind Waker images up soon too, in addition to some other things.

Seagulls in Wind Waker

Hello! im Fairy, im a new author. My first article will be about seagulls because there my favorite thing about TWW.

Seagulls add to the island theme of Wind Waker (and there cute =) ). But in addition to adding a authentic island feel theres many fun facts about them.

Links sisiter Aryll is always surounded by seagulls. Many of them even follow her to the Forsaken Fortress. They can probally tell shes a kind girl and trust her.

For some reason seagulls gather around big Octos. I think they probally try to save the Great Fairy for certain Octos. And maybe they want the shiney treasure guarded by the other Octos.

Hyoi Pears are there favorite food. Its thought that Link can control the seagull after it eats it, but what if they do tricks for the pear? Link does control the wind and might have a understanding of seagulls like his sister does.

Demo Play

Or, “The stupidest thing ever” .

Here is a quote from Nintendo’s top disigner, Shigeru Miyamoto, about the new Super Mario Bros. Wii. and the demo play capability:

“In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, if a player is experiencing an area of difficulty, this will allow them to clear troubled areas and take over when they’re ready. And yes, we’re looking into this for future games, too.”

Pretty much? This allows players to be walked through the game if it gets too hard for them. Sure, it sounds helpful, but why bother…? How lazy are gamers getting? Games have gotten so easy that it has become hard to die in them, if it’s even possible to. Now they’re adding a feature that lets you sit back, have a snack, and watch the game play you through? Doesn’t sound like there’s any catch either. If you’re playing with your grama or something I can see, but why would grama be playing a game that hard ~_~ ?

The only thing I can see this good for is if they will be making games hard again, and are putting this in to help casual gamers get through it. but I don’t think that will be the case.

A Look at the Upcoming Zeldas

With Spirit Tracks and Zelda Wii set for release right around the corner, speculation is probably running wild, as are hopes and fears of what might be in these games. Here are mine.

I’ll start with Spirit Tracks.

I expect the game to follow the same story pattern as Phantom Hourglass, only set on land rather than an ocean. I wont take guesses at a plot centered around trains, as I’m sure to be wrong, so we’ll just leave that blank. As far as difficulty, I’m guessing at a 3/5. Nintendo has been targeting casual gamers lately, so anything higher might be viewed as scary. I am guessing and hoping that the items you get will all serve a significant purpose, based on Phantom Hourglass. I will also say it is safe to guess you will get “new” items that serve the same purpose as older, veteran items such as the boomerang and the grappling hook, based on scenes showing a tornado like weapon that works much the same as the boomerang, and a whip that doubles as a grappling hook. As far as characters go, I would guess there will be a few recurring ones, but not many. This is based on Nintendo’s previous games, that seem to be moving away from the rest of the series.

Next up is Zelda Wii.

Not much has been announced for this game yet, let alone shown. We don’t know anything about where the game’s story will take place, what the plot will be centered around, or even if Link will have the Master Sword yet again. What we do know is that this game is supposed to target hardcore fans and casual gamers, so again, we can count on a small difficulty level. There have also been comments about the staff focusing on the RPG elements of the game. That to me sounds like puzzles, items, and the like. However, Nintendo is also focusing on Link’s sword. What does this mean? It means the sword, as many fans have guessed, will likely be more important than usual, and Nintendo doesn’t want it to work choppy. As for my hopes and fears, at this point I just hope my fears don’t come true, and this game tries to top Ocarina of Time and copy Twilight Princess. Nintendo has to move on. Ocarina was good, Twilight Princess was a little shakey in my opinion, this next game shouldn’t copy either one, it should be it’s own game. Set a new standard for the Zelda series, and stop using past succeses as a selling point. I would like to see some good items with more than one use, and I would like the music to sound more like a video game and less like a church or an over-hyped movie.
